What We Are

The Baker Food Co-op is a democratic, member-owned food store serving Northeast Oregon.

Our members elect the Board of Directors. Our members contribute capital. Our members shape policy. Our members reinvest in the future of the store.

We operate as a business — but one rooted in community ownership, not outside shareholders.

What That Means for Baker County

  • Profits stay local.
  • Decisions are made locally.
  • Local producers are supported.
  • The store answers to its members.

We are accountable to our community because our community owns us.

Membership

Ownership begins with membership.

Initial household membership: $25
Annual renewal: $10

Members receive voting rights, the ability to run for the Board, access to financial reports, participation in governance, and store discounts.

Membership is not a loyalty program. It is ownership.

Working Member Model

The Co-op operates primarily with working members.

  • Work 3–6 hours/month → 10% discount
  • Work 6–9 hours/month → 15% discount
  • Work 10+ hours/month → 20% discount

Participation lowers costs for everyone. This structure has sustained the Co-op for nearly 50 years.

Our Mission

To serve Northeast Oregon providing wholesome natural and organic foods, supplements, sundries, and natural cleaning products as a cooperative.

We exist to provide healthy food access and to strengthen the long-term well-being of our region.

Governance & Transparency

Members elect the Board of Directors. Members vote on bylaw changes. Members attend meetings.

This is not symbolic governance. It is active and ongoing.
